Ideal Symptoms of Teething for Infants

There are some of the symptoms of teething for infants as follows:
  • Diarrhea - Doctors, researchers and parents disagree on this symptom, but many parents notice slightly looser bowel movements when a baby is teething. The extra saliva swallowed is believed to be the cause. Report any diarrhea that lasts more than two bowel movements to your doctor.
  • Low-grade fever - Doctors may be hesitant to say it is linked to teething, but parents may find their baby develops a slight fever while teething. If a fever lasts more than two days, call your doctor.
  • Not sleeping well - Pain can occur during the day and night and you many find your child wakes up more often when the pain gets bad.
  • Cold-like symptoms - Some parents find their baby has a runny nose and coughs more while teething. This likely happens from the baby having her hand in her mouth more often. The doctor should be consulted for teething babies that appear to have a cold.

Some Work, Some Don't

Some things help to reduce baby teething pain and some don't, but it's worth trying them out to see what works in your baby's case. Teething rings, a crib teething rail, teething tablets, water filled and chilled rubber teething toys, and your fingers can all provide that counter-pressure that brings release from the gum pressure.

A cold bottle of water may help. If sucking is bothersome, try it in a cup. The water also helps replace the baby's fluid if she drools a lot or has loose bowel movements. Some parents find cold food helps, such as chilled applesauce, yogurt and pureed peaches.

If none of this works you can try Infant Tylenol. But before giving it or something in its drug family (acetaminophen) to your baby, consult your doctor. Baby Orajel and other teething pain medicines applied directly to the gums may provide relief. The best bet is to try different things until you find one that works with your baby.

You should wipe your baby's gums every day with a clean, damp washcloth or gauze and brush them gently with an infant toothbrush and water. Infant teething is something everyone has to go through. Baby teething will be easier for some than others, but the best thing to remember if your baby is having a tough go, is that it will soon be over.
